日治時期，中山北路是日本皇族到臺灣前往圓山神社參拜必經的「敕使街道」。從基隆港下船，搭火車進入臺北城，再從臺北火車站出發，沿著中山北路直達圓山，中山北路的身分就類似東京青山與原宿之間的表參道。
