衛生署國民健康局分別於96年與97年，以問卷調查2萬5000 名高中職、與2萬1000名國中生，曾嚼過檳榔的比率，國中生為6.2%，高中職生為12.5%。以全國174萬名國中和高中職學生換算，全國共有14萬 名青少年學子曾嚼過檳榔。而檢視縣市別資料發現，台東縣最高，不論國中生或高中職生，皆有高達3成的學生曾嚼過檳榔。
