工業革命時代，當各種環境污染、地球暖化徵兆逐漸浮現，人們開始醒悟，曾經帶給我們無限便利的科技發明，正以驚人的速度反嗜自然。汽、機車雖然是現代人不可或缺的交通工具，卻同時也是工業污染外主要的二氧化碳排放源。有鑑於此，自上個世紀末起，「無車日」的概念與相關活動自歐洲萌生，而臺北市政府所舉辦的「大臺北國際無車日」自2002年舉辦至今，也堂堂邁入第9年！
